If you’re searching for a good music class for your baby, toddler, preschooler, or kindergartner, you probably won’t go wrong with Kindermusik. I cannot speak for every Kindermusik class, of course; we’ve only been to class with one teacher. That one teacher, though, has made a believer out of me!
My daughter’s teacher is filled with a passionate energy; we could feel it as soon as we met her. When we went to her first class, we were a little worried because it was in a church and we are secular homeschoolers. However, the class and its materials were completely nonreligious, and the church was very pretty and non-threatening. As we waited for class to begin, we noticed three boxes of books to check out. I groaned, thinking they were going to be Veggie Tales or something, but it turned out that the music teacher had left them there for us to read. Her Kindermusik logo was on them all, and they were wonderful books that featured favorite characters and learning concepts. We enjoyed reading a few of them before class, and it really set a comfortable mood.
The teacher took charge right away, ushering the kids inside and encouraging us to peek in at them through the window if we needed to. We were also to join the class during the last fifteen minutes (of the sixty minutes). While we sat outside, we hear all kinds of fun, exciting things happening, from stomping to cymbals to rhythm sticks and more. My daughter, who LOVES to make loud noise and to stomp (we regularly drum and use shakers at home), was having a ball; I just knew it.
The kids came out with bells, ushering us in and giving us our own bells to play. When we entered the room at the end of class, she was grinning ear to ear. She was galloping around, dancing to the music and having an absolutely wonderful time. Her teacher encouraged us adults to join in, then we talked about what they did. Most of it was done by singing.
When she handed out the materials at the end of the class, I was especially impressed when she handed them to the children rather than to us parents. She included ALL of us in the discussion, the homework assignments that were provided, everything. She never talked down to the kids, and it was as if we were all in one big group rather than parents versus kids, as you might find in another classroom. It was respectful, yet fun; organized, yet joyful. The class really impressed me, and I would encourage anyone to try one out near them.
You can find a Kindermusik class near you by clicking here. There are materials fees (your child will even get an instrument!) and the price can seem a bit steep, but there are payment plans that are very affordable, and I think it’s well worth the cost. Giving your child a good start in his or her musical education is priceless anyway, don’t you think?
